The Upper Douro Wine Route is one of the largest and oldest wine regions in the world. The wine culture here stretches back to antiquity and it is known that the Romans were producing wine on the banks of the Douro.

With the birth of the Portuguese nation, the region became famous as a great wine exporter but it was only from the XVIIth century that the Douro gained widespread fame for its famous Port Wine.

Over more than 2000 years history has been made on the slopes of the River Douro in a unique vineyard landscape where so much more than just a gift of nature, Port Wine is the fruit of a collective combination of man and nature.

Discover the history of the men and women who made this region a unique landscape in the world.
