The process of making bread begins obtaining its raw material flour. This comes directly from the mill, transported in a donkey, which makes it become a real adventure!

 

After being transported, the task of preparing the dough rests with the grandmothers, who, with their scarves tied to their heads and their sleeves rolled up, beat the dough over and over again.

 

The baking of the bread is done in communal ovens, which are lit in advance with stumps and giestas, forest resources caught in the mountain.

 

The dough has to be made in large quantity because it will be to consume throughout  the whole week.

 

Well leavened, it is the turn of the bread to enter the burning in the ” mouth of the giant”, where after a while the magic seems to happen. Very hot and crispy, nothing better than tasting it, barring a slice with butter or even a strip of cured ham from the previous year.

 

This creative tourism activity was created thinking of those who seek what too genuine and traditional this region offers, namely the confection of rye bread. The visitor will be able to participate, in the confection of bread to the table.

 

On foot or by car towards to Maria do Carmo house. In this place, the visitor will enjoy a series of experiences, which include the preparation of the dough, the lighting of the wood oven, as well as the baking of bread and finally the tasting.

Departure to the Maria do Carmo bakery in Boticas.

09h00 Meeting with Padeira (N41º42'60''O 07º49'20 '').

Welcome with a herbal tea.

Beginning of the famous rye bread.

Prepare the dough, heat the oven and put the bread in the oven to bake.

Farewells, proceeding to Atilhó and Alturas de Barroso, stop and contemplation of the landscape.

Continuation to Travassos - visit to this typically barrosan rural village.

Departure towards Pitões das Júnias.

13h00 Regional lunch.

Continue to Paredes do Rio - visit the village.

Follow to Montalegre, visit to the historical center, the castle and the Ecomuseum of Barroso.

Visit for interpretation and contemplation of the "Chegas de Bois" monument.

Return to the origin.
