Schucking Corn In The Minho

1 Day

2 Days

3 Days

Frequency: September and October

Duration: 1 day

Price per person: From 51,00 €

The “desfolhada” (literally defoliating) is an agricultural task involving husking and shucking - picking the ear and leaving the corncob stovers from the maize harvest. Although it might look like all fun and games, it’s actually hard and tiring work, as much for the adults (men and women) as the teenagers and children who in these villages work in the fields.

The husking and Shucking (“desfolhadas”) always end with a party (with food and drink) to the sound of accordion music and dancing that lasts into the small hours. The traditional husking and shucking (“desfolhadas”) are agricultural activities in our villages which bring together the old and young, friends and neighbours.

During the “desfolhadas”, the appearance of the red maize cobs is paramount to keep everyone’s enthusiasm up.

And the lucky finder (usually they are green) has to cry out at the top of their lungs: - Milho rei! (Maize king!) - and then he or she goes round all the workers and hugs them. In the olden days this was a unique opportunity for the lads to get close to the girls and girlfriends, even fiancés because at the time there were lots of social conventions and parents kept a close eye on their children!
